A brief discussion on the role and value of definitions:

  • tetradian: [post] The meaning of service [or, why definitions matter] http://bit.ly/bbVgNS #entarch #bizarch
  • kvistgaard: Great post by @tetradian http://bit.ly/bbVgNS And I envy his patience 2 address & correct statements I would just file as “immensely stupid”
  • chrisdpotts: @tetradian  Re. your post: http://bit.ly/bbVgNS An architect must be pedantic about certain details, or architecture will be compromised.
  • krismeukens: RT @chrisdpotts @tetradian  An architect must be pedantic about certain details, or architecture will be compromised. < absolutely agreed!
  • richardveryard: @chrisdpotts @tetradian So I guess my insistance on polythetic definition of #entarch counts as metapedantic? http://bit.ly/aPEtla
  • ironick: +1 RT @dougnewdick: @richardveryard defns aren’t that useful, it’s better to look at practices rather than how people use/define a word <valid point, though still disagree: without shared-meaning (‘definition’) there can be no communication

Yet another of those inevitable discussions on ‘What is enterprise-architecture, anyway?’:

  • practicingEA: Take a stand on EA – “the architecture of enterprise technology” or “the architecture of the enterprise?” #entarch #cio <me: the latter. definitely.
  • toddbiske: @practicingEA a challenge is “architecture of the enterprise” is partially handled by other roles, “architecture of enterprise tech” isn’t.
  • aritanninen: @tetradian Do people whose job role is enterprise architect exist? That term has very different meaning in IT and software development. 🙂
  • tetradian: @aritanninen yes, I exist 🙂 our problem is that job-title has been misused in IT etc to mean ‘enterprise IT-architect’ – is not the same!
  • aritanninen: @tetradian Brilliant. =D Not the same at all. Sorely needed role, what most managers should be doing: looking after the organization.
  • tetradian: @aritanninen I tend to see (real) EA more as decision-support for managers/execs – maintains a knowledge-base, creates/supports conversation etc
  • aritanninen: @tetradian OK, I see the difference. My pain: very few mgrs understand org is system and their job to make sure it serves purpose & works. // Most orgs dysfunctional, managed as functional silos, big picture lost. Background to why I find what you are tweeting intrstng.
  • tetradian: @aritanninen first task of #entarch: identify/share/communicate ‘big-picture’. IT-oriented ‘EAs’ rarely do this.
  • kdierc: @tetradian yesss, so I’m not an IT oriented  EA. One of first things i always do is getting the global overview
  • richardveryard: @tetradian @practicingEA Many people who say #entarch isn’t just technology have a very narrow view on what counts as technology. #Heidegger
  • tetradian: @richardveryard hmm. I probably have too wide a view of what = ‘tech’ in #entarch: eg. trucks, RFID-tags, bits of paper, food-mixers etc..
  • taotwit: @richardveryard @tetradian surely the point is to embrace the “whole” than bits or strata – so bits of paper , trust-relations & RFID fit
  • tetradian: @taotwit @richardveryard agreed: tech is still only one part of the #entarch story – must also include trust, motivation, human-factors etc
  • aritanninen: @tetradian Agreed. Don’t know how to put this, but since it’s new to me how big is the EA err… movement? How known is #entarch in general?
  • tetradian: @aritanninen there’ve always been a few of us pushing for whole-enterprise, but even Open Group is getting it now: see http://bit.ly/cc8yhl
  • kdierc: @StevenvtVeld what’s ur def of EA, if it is not architecture of the enterprise?
  • StevenvtVeld: @kdierc Defin of #entarch ought to be arch of enterprise, but in practice is not #cio
  • tetradian: @StevenvtVeld: if “Defin of #entarch ought to be arch of enterprise, but in practice is not”, we should not condone that bad-practice! 🙂
  • StevenvtVeld: @tetradian Then convince OpenGroup, Zachman and other #entarch-method/tool providers #cio
  • tetradian: @StevenvtVeld: “Then convince OpenGroup, Zachman and other #entarch-method/tool providers” – gettin’ there, slowly: see http://bit.ly/cWeEIG [current Open Group conference, ‘Transforming EA into a Business Discipline’]
  • StevenvtVeld: @tetradian I know. John [Zachman?] has known for many years, and [Ron] Tolido said recently TOGAF is mainly about IT. Progress. #entarch #cio
  • aleksb6: @tetradian @thoughttrans we just had an internal discussion earlier this week on need for “Ms. Manners” column for #entarch
  • StevenvtVeld: @tetradian Yes, but as long as business architecture is done in (IT-)projects, usually as some first phase, it will not be very useful
