Tweets from Open Group Amsterdam conference

I managed to grab the chance to jump over to the Open Group Enterprise Architecture Practitioners conference in Amsterdam earlier this week, to take part in the ‘TOGAF Camp’ ‘unconference’ session. As usual, a lot going on, so I’ve collated a fairly large selection of the Tweets that I caught as they were passed around over the three days of the conference (though most are from the Tuesday and Wednesday, the second and third days).

I’ve tried to sort them into speaker-order, with gaps between as appropriate: I hope that makes this rather long list more readable, anyway. Many thanks to those who Tweeted, of course, otherwise we wouldn’t have this information at all.

The list starts after the ‘Read more…’ link: hope you find it useful?

5 Comments on “Tweets from Open Group Amsterdam conference

  1. Tom, we’re glad you could make it this week! I enjoyed reading your tweeted comments during the course of the week, and appreciate the work you’ve done here to collect and compile all the tweets generated during that time. It makes for an interesting read… thanks!

  2. Pat – thanks for the question. 🙂

Dunno if you’re familiar with ‘Open Space’? – see Wikipedia or the Open Space website – that was the basic model that Steve Nunn used for the TOGAF Camp ‘unconference’. It’s a really good technique, though can be a bit challenging at first for people aren’t used to it (and disappointing for would-be presenters when ‘the Law of Two Feet’ means that no-one turns up, as has happened to me once at a similar unconference elsewhere… 🙁 🙂 ).

We had some great discussion on my topic of ‘requirements for next-generation EA toolsets’, though to be honest I was a bit disappointed: there was a very strong focus on tools to support the current generation of EA (such as IT-oriented architecture in TOGAF 9) but not much focus on exploring support for the kinds of workflows that we’re seeing in the upcoming generation of EA (such as we’re seeing in Open Group’s new and very welcome emphasis on business-oriented architecture). I posted the results to the Open Group wiki, but unfortunately that’s members-only (so even I can’t see it any more! ). In essence, though, I’ll stick to the views in my previous posts on this from a couple weeks ago: we need to think wider about those broader workflows (many of them currently done on whiteboard or back-of-napkin) and how we would want toolsets to support those and link them into the formal rigour that the existing toolsets do support well.

Outside of the ‘unconference’ part, I had a lot of really good conversations with various folks about the toolsets theme, and also the Enterprise Canvas concept – more on that later, I hope.

  3. Hi Lynn – many thanks for all your help, and apologies that we somehow didn’t manage to meet up in person (oh well, there’s always a next time… 🙂 ).

Glad the Tweet-compilation seems useful – I always find it much easier myself to make sense of what’s going on if it’s at least sorted into chronological order.

    Will keep in touch, anyway.
