A quick back-and-forth between Chris Potts and Nick Malik on ‘Black Swans’:

  • chrisdpotts: Black Swans & project failures.  Concerned that it’s IT-centric. Greatly dilutes the insight. All investments can have Black Swans. #CIO // Because IT is everywhere, many problems manifest themselves itself in IT. The strategy trap is fixing the ‘IT problem’. // Hypothesis: it’s easier to detect & fix Black Swans in construction vs business change, because we can see, physically, what’s being built.
  • ironick: @chrisdpotts hmmm…I thought a Black Swan, by definition, CANNOT be detected, ie it MUST be a surprise. // Because information connects everything, most problems are information problems (even if they are not understood as such)… // …only to a lesser degree are information problems IT problems.
  • chrisdpotts: More Black Swans, in this week’s Economist.  Here referring to potentially positive, disruptive, ideas. http://econ.st/nqIkI0 #CIO #entarch #bizarch
